Mathew Reed "Ike" Ielfield

LOWVILLE – Mathew Reed “Ike” Ielfield, 86, of Brookside Circle, Lowville, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 16, 2016 at Lewis County General Hospital. 

A celebration of life service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2016, at the Lowville Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Pearson officiating.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Hillside Cemetery, Champion.  There will be no calling hours.  Contributions may be made to Lowville Baptist Church, 7627 State Street, Lowville, NY 13367; or to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY  13367.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Marjorie; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Scott Ielfield and his companion, Jill Hirschey of Lowville; Gregg and Julia Ielfield of Glenfield; Tina Ielfield of Rhinebeck; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Lou Ielfield of South Carolina; a sister, Jane Brooks of Florida; nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by a son, Ralph, who died in 1996; and by a sister, Virginia Fieldstadt.

Mathew Reed was born on June 6, 1929 in Oswego, NY, a son of the late Charles H. and Virginia Reed Ielfield.  He attended Carthage High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1949 until 1954, during the Korean War.  After his service, he worked for the New York Central Railroad in Carthage.  On September 8, 1956, he married Marjorie Howe at Antwerp Methodist Church, with Rev. Tanner officiating.  Ike was a radio announcer for WBRV, and worked for Law Brothers and Sweeney Lumber as an accountant for 12 years.  He went to work for Kraft Foods, working there for nearly 20 years, until his retirement in 1989.  

Mr. Ielfield was a member of Lowville Baptist Church.  He was a past Mason in the Turin Lodge, and a past member of the South Lewis Lions Club.

Reed enjoyed fishing and woodworking years ago.  He also enjoyed reading.  Ike and Marge wintered in North Myrtle Beach, SC for 15 years.  He lived for Syracuse sports.
