Biography

LOWVILLE- Leon K. Stewart, Jr., 83, of Lanpher Street, formerly of East Martinsburg, died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, where he has resided since March, 2011.

The Funeral will be Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville, with Rev. Beth O'Neil, Pastor of the Lowville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 1-3 p.m. prior to the funeral, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowville United Methodist Church, 7618 North State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.

He is survived by his wife, Marline ; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Judy Stewart and John and Pamela Stewart, all of Glenfield; a sister Doris Bowman of Randolph, Vermont; four grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by three sisters, Bernice Pugh, Helen Spann and Shirley Dierken.

He was born on May 6, 1928 in Croghan, NY, a son of the late Leon K. Stewart Sr. and Mary Lewis Stewart and graduated from General Martin School in 1946. He worked on the family farm. On August 26, 1950, he married Shirley E. Countryman at the Lowville United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Williams, officiating. Together with his wife, he owned and operated the family dairy farm on the Williams Road in East Martinsburg for over 50 years, until retiring. The couple moved to Brookside Senior Living Community in September, 2006. Shirley died on February 23, 2007. He later married Marline Bodnar. He was a member of the Lowville United Methodist Church, and was a past member of the Eastern Milk Producers. He was Past Chairman of Co-Operative Extension and a member of Tug Hill Planning Board. He was on the Board of Directors for the Lewis County Soil and Water District. An avid outdoorsman, Leon enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing, and camping. He was also a member of several local hunting clubs.
