Edward James Duffer, 76, passed away on Tuesday July 26 with his family present in his room.

Ed was born on February 18, 1940 to Albert and Beulah Marolf Duffer in Croghan. He was disabled after a head trauma during his childhood. He lived at home and for some years at Rome State School.  He then moved to the Lewis County General Hospital Extended Care Facility which he called home for 40 plus years on the fourth floor.

Ed enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas where he often played Santa for the family parties. He also looked forward to his birthday and his annual visit to the Lewis County Fair. Ed was always interested in cars, trucks and animals of all kind. Ed showed his love for his family and his extended family of friends and staff. Ed was part of the ARC program for many years retiring from this in 2014.

Ed is survived by his brothers Robert and his companion, Mary Lou Peebles, from Carthage, Richard from Castorland, and Tim and Cindy from Castorland; his sisters, Phyllis Berwick Washburn from Boonville, Joan and Carl Kieffer from Croghan, and Rae and Leon Austin, from Lowville; sixteen nieces and nephews, and at least that many in the next generation; also aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ed is predeceased by his parents Albert and Beulah, a nephew Ricky Berwick, two brothers in law, Frank Berwick and Frank Washburn, and a sister in law Joan (Joie) Duffer.

The family would like to thank all of the staff in the Nursing Home especially those on fourth floor for the wonderful care that was given to Ed during his many years there.
