I only got to know Maurice the last few years of his life. During our correspondences and visits he always put me at ease. His hospitality, generosity and sense of humor were something unmatched. Thank you Maurice to introducing me to look at Nature a different way. I will miss him very much. Greg Hinkley

I met Maurice at the 2012 Returning the Gift celebration in Milwaukee. We were with a group of people in a van being driven by a young man who seemed intent on hitting every pot hole that he could. In the process, Maurice's hot coffee spilled over. I tried to hold the cup for Maurice, but the coffee spilled more. We got a good laugh together. After that time, I have read much of his work, especially loving Tekonwatatonti: Molly Brant. How I wish I had had more time to get to know you!

Maurice published some of my poems when I was just beginning to write. I will always be grateful to him for his encouragement back in those days, and for broadening my poetry horizons with his publications.

I knew Maurice as a poet and friend. He was not only a strong poetic voice but a generous and helpful editor, who lifted up so many beginning Native American writers. But for me he will always be the man of wonderful late night talks. So many are missing him already.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Maurice was so kind to me when I was a young poet, and every time I've seen him since. Sending warm thoughts to you all.

In respectful celebration of my teacher:

We, as poets, oft sing songs less heard, unravel webs less seen and draw from wellsprings few would taste in this still thirsty world.

Maurice was co-editor with me of two anthologies of essays on the North Country and the Adirondacks; a teacher at high school writers' conferences that I directed; an editor of my work; and a partner in some other writing enterprises. But most of all, he was my mentor, and friend. I shall miss him greatly.

Maurice was indeed a bright light for students, for the SUNY Potsdam campus community and for the arts! I will always remember the electricity in the air I felt during the poetry readings he organized.

Maurice was my generous host overnight when Anne was in the hospital at Saranac Lake. We've enjoyed his poetry and his openness. A warm -hearted soul and peaceable Mohawk warrior, may he be this day with The Creator.

So grateful for his being, his doing, his sharing and caring. How quickly time has passed so that it is now a long time since I heard his stories, giggled at his irreverent humor, was comforted and affirmed by his insights. I am grateful for the visits he hosted at Saranac Lake and Onondaga Community College, the readings and workshops he arranged at the prison, the great community and communion that he so generously shared, his expansive and embracing openness. May his transition be smooth and joyous. My deepest condolences to all who loved and held him dear.
