Bernard E. Berrus

January 16, 1937 ~ January 22, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old


LOWVILLE – Bernard E. Berrus, 80, of O’Brien Road, Lowville, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at his home, under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice. 

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc, with Rev. David Herrmann, Pastor of the Lowville United Methodist Church, officiating.  Calling hours will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the funeral home.  Spring burial will be in the West Lowville Rural Cemetery.  Contributions may be made to Lowville United Methodist Church, 7618 N. State Street, Lowville, NY 13367; Friends of Lewis County Hospice, PO Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367; or a charity of one’s choice.

He is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Jane; five children, Andrew and Jean Berrus of New Bremen; Thomas Berrus and his companion Trina of Castorland; Stanley Berrus of Lowville; Michael Berrus of Lowville; Penny and John Harris of Dry Ridge, KY; a sister, Mary Helen and John Harpending of Florida; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by a daughter, Victoria Buell who died in December of 1987; a brother, Francis Berrus; and a sister, Delores Sill.

Bernard was born on January 16, 1937 in Lowville, a son of the late Stewart S. and Helen Edick Berrus.  He graduated from Lowville Academy in 1954, and worked on the family farm after graduation.  On August 31, 1957, he married Jane Hill at Greig United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating.  Bernard and Jane took over the family farm in 1960, and together the couple owned and operated the farm until 2002.  Upon retirement, Bernard worked as a demonstrator for Wal-Mart and other area stores for many years.  Bernard served as a Town Councilman for the Town of Harrisburg for five years, and served as Town Supervisor for the Town of Harrisburg for over 20 years.

Bernard was a member of Lowville United Methodist Church.  He was a trustee and treasurer for the West Lowville Rural Cemetery Association since 1995.  Bernard was a member of Masonic Lodge F & AM #154 for over twenty years.  He was also a past member of B.P.O.E. #1605, Lowville Elks Lodge.

He and his wife, Jane, enjoyed over 30 years of modern, western, round and square dancing.   They danced nationwide and in Berlin, East Germany, Canada, Hawaii, and at many of the conventions.  They also enjoyed wintering in Ocala, FL since 2009.
