LOWVILLE – Charlotte M. Zehr, 96, of Brookside Circle, died Wednesday morning at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 2016 at First Mennonite Church, New Bremen with Bruce Chartrand, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will be held privately in First Mennonite Church

Cemetery.  Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  Contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 21 South 12th Street, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Beatrice Zehr of Croghan; a niece and her husband, Mary and Andy Grau of Castorland; four nephews and their wives, Ben and Patricia Zehr of Indianapolis, IN; Mark and Debra Zehr of Greeley CO; Vaughn Zehr of Croghan; Jan Zehr of Croghan; eight grand nieces and nephews; fourteen great-grand nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a brother, Mark J. Zehr, a sister, Kathleen LaJune Zehr, and a grand nephew, Zachary D. Zehr.

Miss Zehr was born on December 14, 1919 in Croghan, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Susianna Lehman Zehr.  She attended a one room school house on Mechanic Street in Croghan, NY, and in 1937, graduated from Beaver Falls High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Goshen College, and completed graduate work at The Teacher’s College at Columbia, The University of California, Colorado State, Syracuse, Potsdam, Plattsburgh, and St. Lawrence Universities.  It was at St. Lawrence University that she received a Master’s Degree.  After one year of teaching in LaHarpe, Illinois, she returned to New York State to teach English at West Carthage High School for three years.  In 1945, she became employed at Lowville Academy as an English teacher.  She then became a remedial reading teacher, and later, a reading supervisor.  In 1957, Miss Zehr was appointed to the position of Elementary Principal for the Lowville Academy and Central School District.  She served in that capacity until 1975, when she retired early in order to care for her mother.

Miss Zehr was a life-long member of First Mennonite Church, New Bremen, where she was a church Elder and taught Sunday school.  She was heavily active in the New York State Teacher’s Association and the Elementary School Principals’ Association.  She was a member of the International Reading Association and helped initiate the Black River Valley Reading Council. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Watertown, NY.  She was also a member of Current Topics of Lowville, and the former president of Lowville Civic Club. After retirement, she volunteered weekly at the Agape Shoppe in Watertown with her sister, Kathleen.

Miss Zehr enjoyed reading, knitting, traveling, quilting and gardening.
