William Hughes Obituary

CARTHAGE- William H. Hughes, 74, of State Route 26 passed away Sunday morning, August 27, 2023 at Carthage Area Hospital. 

William is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret; three children, Antionette Hughes-Downey (Adam) of Carthage; William (Florida) Hughes of Willow Spring, N.C.; Michael (Carrie) Hughes of Valley, AZ; 7 grandchildren, Dakota Hughes, Myra Hughes, Amber (Drew) Schnur, Savannah Hughes, Gregory Downey, Sarah Downey, and Gabrielle Downey; two great-grandchildren, Hayliegh Schnur and Olivia Schnur.  He is predeceased by his mother, Janice L. Taray; his grandparents, McClerry S. and Nellie Mae Baker Wilson; his uncles, Lloyd Wilson and Henderson A. Wilson; his aunts, Margarite Wilson and Jannett Wilson.

William was born September 4, 1948 in Visalia, CA, a son of the late Anthony and Janice Wilson Taray.  After graduation, William joined the U.S. Marine Corp and proudly served his country. After two tours of duty in Vietnam he joined the U.S. Navy.  He married Margaret Repinski on December 4, 1969 in Neosho, Wisconsin.  After his service he worked as a clinical engineer for many hospitals throughout the U.S.  He retired from Barnes Jewish Health System in St. Louis, Missouri in 2015.  William moved to the North Country in 2019.  He was proud to be a Marine and was a life member of Carthage VFW Post #7227.  William enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool at the VFW, golden oldies music, classic cars, his Green Bay Packers football team, his dogs, Rambo, Little Bear, and Tator Tot.  He also loved spending time outside tending to his yard, garden and building projects, farm animals and happily living in the country on his daughter’s homestead.  Most of all, William loved his family.

A Military Honors Service will be held at Iseneker Funeral Home, Lowville, on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 12:00 pm.  In keeping with the family's wishes there will be no calling hours.
