Irvine Buchal Obituary

COPENHAGEN-Irvine J. “Dutch” Buchal, 93, of Deer River Road passed away Tuesday August 15, 2023 at Sunset Nursing and Rehab Center, Boonville.

Visitation will be held at Iseneker Funeral Home, 5702 Waters Road, Lowville, on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  A funeral service will follow immediately after at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Canon Samuel Lundy officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Copenhagen.  Please join the family for a meal immediately following the graveside service at 3G Fire Department, Blue Street, Glenfield.  Any donations of desserts for the meal may be left at the 3G Fire Department on Friday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to help with funeral expenses by clicking the donate button on Irvine’s obituary at www.isenekerfuneralhome.com, or by mail at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville, NY 13367.  Please consider helping Irvine’s family in their time of need.

Irvine “Dutch” Buchal met Helen Anna Curtis in 1966 and they married on June 22, 1967 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Copenhagen.  He is survived by two children, Betsy (Kevin Condon) Columbus, Ohio and Frank (Cindy Winchell) Buchal and grandson Joseph, Copenhagen; a sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Carl Thesier of Carthage; nieces, nephews and cousins.  Irvine is predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Elmer Burdick; a niece, Patricia Burdick Curran, and a nephew Elmer Burdick Jr.

Dutch was born on October 23, 1929 at home in the Town of Denmark, NY, a son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Schimpfke Buchal.  He attended country school in the town of Denmark and Copenhagen Central School.  He worked on the family farm.  When Dutch was 16, his father passed away, and he continued to help on the farm to support his family.  After his marriage, together with his wife, they owned and operated the dairy farm until 2019.  His beloved wife Helen passed away on November 20, 2019.  Dutch was an active member of Flywheels and Pulleys, working at the Old Time Show in Constableville for many years.  He was also a member of the NNY Draft horse Club.  Dutch was selected to the Tug Hill Sages, it is a distinction bestowed upon local individuals with vast knowledge of the Tug Hill region’s heritage and environment and that have shown a lifelong involvement in the region.   Dutch and Helen regularly attended the summer music series at The New York State Old Tyme Fiddler’s Association in Osceola, New York.  He took Helen to concerts regularly and they shared reserved seating and an ice-cream Sundae each Sunday.

Dutch was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and a member of the former St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, New Boston.  He loved antiques and working in the woods cutting wood.  Dutch collected local antiques and was interested in local and family history.
