Katherine D. Van Nest

LOWVILLE – Katherine D. Van Nest, 82, of Lowville, died Wednesday morning, December 6, 2017 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility.

She is survived by her five children, Susan D. and Chris Virkler of Croghan; Brenda L. Van Nest of Lowville; Christine M. Van Nest of Lowville; Stanley J. and Lynnette Van Nest of Lowville; Robert M. and Tracy Van Nest of Lowville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Joan and George Covel of Sushun, NY, Mary Gordon of Castorland, Bernice and Dean Johnson of Carthage; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, John F. Van Nest, who died on March 25, 2016; a son, John Gregory Van Nest, who died in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Ronald Gordon.

Katherine was born on June 14, 1935 in the Town of Lowville, NY, a daughter of the late Stanley Joseph and Kathryn N. Zelazowski Borowiec and graduated from Lowville Academy in 1953.   On June 14, 1958, she married John Van Nest at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Edward M. Delaney officiating.  Katherine worked at Beaverite in Beaver Falls before she had her family.  After her husband retired, she cared for the elderly.  She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where she was a longtime member of the Daughters of Isabella.  She enjoyed collecting post Cards.

A private funeral service will be held at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Jay Seymour, Pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, officiating.  Spring burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 81, Lowville, NY  13367 or St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 5457 Shady Ave., Lowville, NY 13367.
