Harold Peebles

April 10, 1921 ~ January 7, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old


DENMARK - Harold Peebles, 95, of State Route 26, died early Saturday morning, January 7, 2017 at his home under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice. 

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg, Rev. Tracy Cook, Pastor, and Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, officiating.  Calling hours will be from 4 - 8 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2017, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  Burial will be in Martinsburg Cemetery in the spring.  Contributions may be made to Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 127, Castorland, NY  13620.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pearl; four children and their spouses, Pamela and Robin Hoskins of Port Leyden; Douglas and Deborah Peebles of Barnes Corners; Steven and Hanh Peebles of Liverpool; Lloyd Peebles and his companion, Joyce of Denmark; a brother, Charles Peebles of Lowville; a sister, Louise Schantz of Lowville; 21grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by granddaughters, Annette Blair Merry; Janessa and Jessica Peebles; and three brothers, Henry and his wife, Loretta Peebles, James Peebles, Austin Peebles; and a sister-in-law, Ardis Peebles.

Harold was born on April 10, 1921 at home in Lowville, a son of the late Lloyd and Mary Austin Peebles.  He graduated from Lowville Academy in 1940.  While in school, he worked on the family farm, and for area farms.  He worked in construction prior to his marriage.  On December 6, 1952, he married Pearl E. Berrus at Lowville United Methodist Church.  Harold continued working in the construction of bridges until, together with his wife, the couple purchased a dairy farm on Route 26 in Denmark in 1959.  Harold and Pearl operated the dairy farm for many years, until retiring, and selling the farm to their son, Lloyd.

Mr. Peebles was a member of Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg.  He was a life member of B.P.O.E. #1605, Lowville Elks Lodge, a member of the North Country Draft Horse Club, and a member of the former Denmark Grange.  Harold served on the Board of Directors of the Northern New York Farmer’s Market.    

He enjoyed refinishing furniture.  Harold loved hunting, draft horses, and attending his grandsons’ go cart races.  He was an avid Jeff Gordon fan.
