Gerald R. Leichtweis

LOWVILLE – Gerald R. Leichtweis, 92, of Eugene Street, Lowville, died peacefully on January 27, 2017.

The memorial service will be Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Lowville, with Rev. Laurie Sponaugle, Pastor, officiating.  Military Honors will be observed at the church.  Calling hours are from 4 – 6 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 7707 N. State St., Lowville, NY  13367

He is survived by his wife of over 71 years, Janis; four children, John and Bonnie Leichtweis of Waldorf, MD; Linda Leichtweis of Lowville; Wendy and Bernard Rook of Vernon Center, NY; Tom and Connie Leichtweis of Lowville; a sister, Betsy Maybe of Toledo, OH; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  He is predeceased by two grandsons, Jacob and Peter Leichtweis; and by two brothers, Charlie and Jim Leichtweis.

Gerald was born on June 1, 1924 in Toledo, Ohio, a son of the late George and Elizabeth Faber Leichtweis.  He graduated from Campion Military Academy in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.  Gerald served in the U.S. Army during World War II.    On Novemeber 24, 1945, he married Janis A. Dale in Toledo, OH.  The couple lived in Toledo until 1954, when they moved to Lowville where Gerald worked as a chemist for Payne – Jones for many years until his retirement.  

Mr. Leichtweis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lowville.  Together with his wife, they were members of Turin Highlands for many years.  Gerald enjoyed woodworking, working on his lawn, and reading.
