Edna C. Yousey

April 6, 1926 ~ July 2, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old


CROGHAN – Edna C. Yousey, 90, formerly of Croghan, passed away Saturday morning, July 2, 2016, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, surrounded by her loving family.

Calling hours are Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8 p.m. at the Naumburg Mennonite Church. Burial will be held privately in the Croghan Mennonite Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at the Naumburg Mennonite Church with Rev. Titus Mast and Rev. Myron Roggie officiating. Contributions may be made to the Naumburg Mennonite Church Library, P.O. Box 137, Castorland, NY 13620; or to the Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Farm, 8778 Erie Canal Road, Croghan, NY  13327.  Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Glen and Debbie Yousey of Lowville; Loren and Darlene Yousey of Castorland; her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and John Widrick of Lowville; Rose and Dennis Kauffman of Lancaster, PA; Linda and Lawrence Moser; Phyllis and Bruce Moser; Barbara and Bruce Roggie; Elaine and Sidney Zehr, all of Castorland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard “John” and Judy Roes, and Melvin and Judy Roes, all of Lowville, Nelson and Mary Roes of Croghan,  Vernon and Doreen Roes of Harrisonburg, VA;  sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Alvin Zehr, Jr.,  Nancy and Marvin Widrick all of Lowville, and Alice and Alvin Roggie of Castorland,  a sister-in-law, Wilma Watkins of Michigan; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is predeceased by her husband, Elmer Yousey in 1982; a grandson, Joel Moser, and his wife, Marie; a granddaughter, Jan Widrick; a great-granddaughter, Grace Yousey;  brothers and sisters-in-law, Maurice and Rosella Roes, Edward and Bertha Roes, Lloyd and Clara Roes, Raymond and Anna Mae Roes; a sister and brother-in-law, Anna Mae and Grant Noftsier.

Edna was born in Milverton, Ontario, Canada on April 6, 1926, a daughter of the late Samuel and Lena Nafziger Roes. She attended various country schools, and earned her G.E.D. at age 66.  On September 11, 1946, she married Elmer Yousey at the Dadville Mennonite Church.  Together with her husband, the couple operated a dairy farm on Route 126, Carthage, until 1983.  Mrs. Yousey was a reading monitor at River Valley Mennonite School from 1983 until 1991; and worked at the local health food store from 1992 until 1996.

Mrs. Yousey was a Charter Member of Naumburg Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School and worked in the church library for many years.  She was a Literacy Volunteer from 1992 until 1995.  Edna took oil painting lessons, and created many paintings to share with friends and family.  She was a member of the knitting club. 

Edna enjoyed reading and traveling, taking a trip to Paraguay with her husband in 1977, and bus trips to Florida, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Alaska, California and Cape Cod.Special thanks to the many caregivers who came into her home at Steepleview to help care for our Mom. 

To all the caregivers at Lewis County General Hospital and the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, and especially the staff of the 4th floor; the family wishes to thank you for all your kindness, friendship, and care for Mom and to our family.
