Shirley Youngs Obituary

CASTORLAND – Shirley A. Youngs, 86, of Artz Road, passed away late Thursday evening, February 2, 2023 at Carthage Area Hospital.

In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  A graveside service will be in the spring at Martinsburg Cemetery at a date and time to be announced, with a Celebration of Life gathering to follow.

Shirley’s children would like everyone to know what a wonderful, loving and selfless woman she was.  She always put others before herself.  Shirley truly enjoyed her family, and spending time with them, gardening, canning, camping, snowmobiling, barn dances, drive in movies, local fairs, flea markets, and Flywheels and Pulleys Shows.  Shirley loved to knit, crochet, make clocks, make jewelry, and do other crafts, to make any sell at her flea market on the Artz Road.  She also sold at various other markets and shows.  She loved her toy poodles.

She is survived by five children, Robbin and Bruce Steria of Martinsburg; Ronald Youngs Jr. and Marsha Youngs of Greig; Rebecca and Joseph Livezey of Brantingham; Regina and Steven Gaffney of Pulaski; Rhonda Farney and her companion, Randy Simmons of Castorland; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren, and two on the way; a sister Ada Drelick of Lowville; nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is predeceased by her beloved husband who was the love of her life, Ronald F. Youngs who passed on July 10, 2015; a sister, Irene Beach; and three grandchildren, David, Sherry, and Reneé Proulx.

Shirley was born on August 30, 1936 in Lowville, NY, a daughter of the late Spencer Knight and Frances Marolf Knight.  She attended Father Leo Memorial School in Croghan.  Shirley did domestic work for area families and worked at the Miller House in Croghan prior to her marriage.  On August 20, 1955, she married Ronald F. Youngs at the Lowville United Methodist Church parsonage.  She raised her family before going to work for the Dadville Tree Nursery, and later working for AMF Bowling Products in Lowville, retiring after more than 25 years of service.

Mrs. Youngs attended the Lowville United Methodist Church and Beaver Falls United Methodist Church.

Shirley’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren feel very blessed to have had her in their lives.
