Michael Lewis Obituary

CROGHAN- Michael Wilbur “Mike” Lewis, 78, of Convent Street, passed away Sunday evening, January 11, 2026 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility where he has resided since February, 2024.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna; two sons, Merlin Lewis and his fiancé Katrina Nilsson of Tupper Lake; Michael Lewis Jr. of South Portland, ME; five grandchildren, Nicole and Tyler Nilsson, DeAnna Lewis, Austin and Abilene Lewis; a great grandson, Hayden Thomas Lewis.  He is also survived by a sister, Loretta Larkin of Las Vegas, NV; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mike is predeceased by his siblings, Lee Ann Lewis, Wilbur Lewis Jr., Lucinda Lewis and Bryon Lewis.

Michael was born on December 1, 1947 in Passaic, NJ, a son of the late Wilbur and Doris Dunn Lewis.  He graduated from Wallington High School in Wallington, NJ in 1965 and then graduated from Ranger School in Wanakena, NY.  Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1967-1971 during the Vietnam War.  On April 5, 1969, he married Donna Adams at the First Baptist Church in Oswegatchie, NY.  After his service, Mike worked various jobs before becoming a NYS Forest Ranger with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in Schoharie County for four years and then moving to Lewis County and working at NYS DEC in Dadville, NY until his retirement in 2004.   He also attended gunsmithing school from October 1, 1973 until January 31, 1975 in Denver, CO.

Mike is a member of Beaver Falls United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed reading, watching old movies, listening to various music genres, target shooting, working on an old gun until it shoots better than it should, turkey sandwiches, riding his bike, and he was always ready for a cup of coffee.

In keeping with Mike’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lewis County Hospital Foundation, Attn: Rainbow Community, 7785 N. State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.
