CASTORLAND - Mary Lee Pierce, 76, of State Route 410, passed away Saturday morning, August 5, 2023, at her home, under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.
Calling hours are 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Shekinah Mennonite Fellowship, Croghan. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023 at the church with Pastors Darrell Roggie and Sandy Lyndaker officiating. Burial will follow in Castorland Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shekinah Mennonite Church, in care of Sandy Lyndaker, Pastor, 9802 Bridge Street, Croghan, NY 13327 or Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; two daughters, Rose Marie Becton of Killeen, TX; and Maggie Juanita Lawhorn of Fort Barnwell, NC; four step-children, Eugene W. and wife, Michelle Pierce of Columbus, OH; Timothy W. and wife, Sally Pierce of Lowville; Helen W. and husband, Fredy Caballero, of Somerset, KY; Ashley Sanders of Denmark, SC; eight sisters and two brothers, Loretta Wallace of New Bern, NC; Rebecca Norfleet of Kinston, NC; Lola Daughery of VA; Rita Norfleet of New Bern, NC; Linda S. Kilpatrick of Grifton, NC; Lillie S. Ward of Fort Barnwell, NC; Sheila Sutton of Grifton, NC; Sympathy Sutton of Fort Barnwell, NC; Lloyd Victor Sutton of Fort Barnwell, NC and Joseph Daniel Sutton of VA; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nine step grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents; a sister, Kathrine Sutton; and by three brothers, Kirby Ray Sutton, Michael Abram Sutton and Ernest Edward.
Mary Lee was born on December 18, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY, a daughter of the late Jarvis and Rosetta Hooks Edwards. She graduated from Newbold High School in Fort Barnwell, NC, and from Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC with a degree in Broadcasting, and also attended Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Kentucky. Mary Lee worked in broadcasting as a radio manager, as a restaurant manager for Hardee’s, and as a hairdresser before moving to the North Country in 2012. On July 17, 2017, she married Daniel Eugene Pierce at Shekinah Mennonite Fellowship, with Rev. Darrell Roggie officiating.
Mrs. Pierce was a member of the Shekinah Mennonite Fellowship. She enjoyed listening to Gospel music, reading Mary Higgins Clark mysteries, cooking and entertaining. Mary Lee also loved doing puzzles.
