Linda Mumford Obituary

LOWVILLE-Linda Roxanne Handy Mumford, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born on August 6, 1942, in Rochester NY, Linda was the daughter of Cornelius Frederick and Shirley Briggs Handy. As the child of an agricultural agent for Cornell Cooperative Extension, Linda’s early years were marked by frequent moves across western and central New York. The family settled in Lowville in 1960, where Linda graduated from Lowville Academy in 1961.

Linda attended Rochester Business Institute, where she earned a certificate in secretarial science in 1963. After graduation, she worked at Lowville Producers Dairy and later at the Lewis County Trust Company before relocating to western NY after her parents’ retirement. During her time in Lowville, Linda purchased a Volvo from John Clyde Mumford, beginning a lifelong friendship that would eventually blossom into marriage.

In Buffalo, Linda worked as an executive secretary and legal aide at Liberty National Bank. She and John continued to keep in touch, and the couple married in Lowville on July 19, 1978, where they purchased a house on Easton Street. Over the next 30 years, this would be their cherished family home. Linda took tremendous pride in their home, and was an enthusiastic interior decorator and avid gardener.

Linda's final position in banking was with Jefferson National Bank, where she worked as an administrative assistant and loan officer until the bank’s closure in 1993.

Linda and John were overjoyed to welcome their only child, Mallory, in 1983. They cherished their time with Mallory, and enjoyed watching her grow up. The three of them spent countless summer days attending antique car shows across the North Country and enjoying their camp on Chase Lake.

Before her illness, Linda devoted much of her time to her elderly parents, who moved back to Lowville in 1997. After their passing in 2007, Linda and John downsized to a smaller home on Sunset Drive, where they continued to enjoy their life together.

Linda was known for her vibrant personality and infectious laugh, which was often the loudest in the room. She was kind-hearted, always striving to make others smile. Linda loved spending time with her family and friends, shopping, traveling, and swimming and boating on Chase Lake. She was a frequent patron of Lloyd’s of Lowville, where she enjoyed the food and the friendships. She was an active member of her community, participating in several organizations, including the Women’s Auxiliary at Lewis County General Hospital, the Northern Cruisers, and the North Country Garden Club. Linda was also a member of the Lowville Presbyterian Church.

Although Linda’s illness had advanced by the time her granddaughter arrived, she found great joy in visiting with her and treasured their time together.

Linda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mallory and Robert Augustus, Watertown, NY; one grandchild, Lauren; a sister, Bonnie Bielinski Malone of Mechanicville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2022 and her brother, Phillip, in 2014.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff on the fourth floor of the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility for their unwavering kindness and dedication to making Linda’s final years as comfortable as possible.

A memorial service will be held at the Lowville Presbyterian Church on May 3, 2025 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Old Glendale Cemetery, where Linda will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, John. Arrangements are entrusted to Iseneker Funeral Home, Lowville.
