Karl Eric Stahl Funeral Service

LOWVILLE – Karl Eric Stahl, 67, formerly of River Street, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2024 at Lewis County Health System Nursing Home.

He is survived by his siblings, Friedrich “Fritz” Stahl of Lowville, Gretchen and Jim McManus of Swoope, VA, Heidi and John Honey of Henderson, Trina Stahl of South Hill, VA; many nieces, nephews, grand- nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Deborah in 2023; his father, Harry Stahl in 1975; his mother, Ellen Stahl in 2005.

Karl was born on August 23, 1956 in Lowville, a son of the late Harold A. “Harry” and Ellen Rosemary Weinheimer Stahl.  He grew up in Lowville, where he received his education, graduating from Lowville Academy in the Class of 1974 with a regent’s diploma, a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Union College of Schenectady, and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from University of Maryland.

Karl was a disk jockey for WBRV – The Moose radio station for many years, where he met longtime listener Deborah A. McCoy and the couple was united in marriage on May 8, 2004. Together the couple volunteered for Lewis County Search & Rescue, where they worked as dispatchers in the overnight hours.  Karl’s work  as an EMT since April 1981 earned him special recognition as a Lifetime Member of Lewis County Search and Rescue on December 15, 1999.  Before Karl was a D.J. for WBRV, he worked as a Library Assistant in Maryland.  He was also Librarian for several years at The Post Library at Ft. Drum, and for Flower Memorial Library in Watertown.  Karl was also Census Crew Leader for the U.S. Census Bureau during the 1990 Census.

Karl was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lowville.

He published Just Focus Poems by Karl Stahl in 1999 with the help of his life-long friend, Joe Hamilton.  He was a wood carver and had a piece entered in the 1994 North Country Regional Juried Art Show.  His piece was named “Go, Go, Go”.  He also enjoyed origami and made many crane mobiles.  Karl loved helping people and giving what he could to others.  He also loved to walk all over Lowville and enjoyed taking many photos of the falls near the Lowville Rural Cemetery.  Karl was a musician.  He played trombone in a jazz band at college, with Pat Brown’s Band, and the Lowville Village Band.    

A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church, Lowville with Pastor Greg Jenkins officiating.  There will be a calling hour from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service, at the church.  Burial will follow in Lowville Rural Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Lewis County Search and Rescue, 7740 W.
