CROGHAN – Haskell A. Yancey Jr., 71, of Long Pond Road, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 25, 2024, at Lewis County General Hospital.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Jane; three children, Beth (Daniel) Faulknham of Cape Vincent, Timothy (Erin) Yancey of Croghan, and Catherine Yancey of Croghan; two granddaughters, Jocelyn and Margot Faulknham; his sister, Myrna Tew of Keeler, CA; his mother-in-law, Anabel Weise of Mayville, NY; and numerous cousins and in-laws. He was predeceased by his son, Michael Yancey, on April 1, 2006, and his infant brother, Lonnie Yancey, in 1955.

Haskell was born on February 5, 1953, in Lowville, to the late Haskell A. and Mabel R. (Yousey) Yancey. A graduate of Beaver River Central School’s Class of 1971, he continued his education at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics and Animal Science in 1975. On May 26, 1973, he married Jane Weise in Mayville, NY.

Haskell began his career as an independent carpenter and Agricultural Agent for Lewis County Cooperative Extension. In 1982, he and Jane took over the family farm on Long Pond Road, dedicating their lives to dairy farming and the family’s maple business, Yancey’s Sugarbush. Haskell took pride in operating the evaporator every spring and sharing his knowledge and passion for maple production with visitors, family, and friends. It brought him immense joy to see his children and grandchildren carrying on the maple traditions. Haskell and his family were honored to be recognized by TAUNY’s North Country Heritage Award in 2010, and the NYS Centennial Award in 2017.

Haskell was a dedicated public servant, serving as Town Supervisor for Croghan from 1996 to 2007.  He was a member of the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, where he contributed actively to its community. Over the years, he held leadership roles in many organizations, including the Lewis County Farm Bureau, Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative, and the Lewis County Maple Producers Association, where he represented the county on the NYS Maple Producers Association board since 2015. He was also on the Board of Trustees for the International Maple Museum Centre for over 25 years and the founding president of the Northern New York Maple Producers Cooperative. His involvement extended to numerous other agricultural organizations, including the NNY Farmers Marketing Cooperative, NNY Agricultural Development Committee, Farmland Protection Board, Forest Practices Board, and others.

Haskell’s warmth, dedication, and love for his community will be deeply missed.

The funeral will be at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church with Beth Monnat and Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, pastors officiating.  Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery Annex in Beaver Falls.  A luncheon at the church fellowship hall will immediately follow the services, all are welcome.  Any food donations may be taken directly to the church fellowship hall on Sunday.  Calling hours will be from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Iseneker Funeral Home, 5702 Waters Road, in Lowville.
