Donald Steria

LOWVILLE/CROGHAN – Donald Steria, 85, of East Road, Lowville, formerly of Erie Canal Road, Croghan, passed away at home on Monday May 25, 2026 under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.

Donald is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lillian Steria of Croghan; a sister-in-law, Savilla Steria of Lowville; 18 nieces and nephews, 21 great-nieces and great-nephews, and nine great-great nieces and great-great nephews.  He is predeceased by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Rev. Gilbert Steria; Alvin Steria Jr. (Doris); and a sister, Helen Steria.

Donald was born at home in Croghan, NY on December 22, 1940, a son of the late Alvin Steria Sr. and Laura Roggie Steria.  He attended country school on the Erie Canal Road, and worked on the family farm.  He cut firewood in Barnes Corners and sold it throughout the North Country.  In his younger years, he was well known for playing softball in church and county leagues for many years, and Donnie was also well known for stealing bases.  In the wintertime, he loved to play ice hockey with the neighborhood boys.  He enjoyed hunting and his time in the family sugarbush.  For the past few years, Donnie enjoyed sitting at his family run business, Stony Creek Country Store in Deer River, where he greeted the customers as they came in.  He will be missed.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday May 28, 2026 at Croghan Mennonite Church with Pastor Sandy Lyndaker, Retired Pastor Darrell Roggie, Elders, Shawn Bender, and Jim Moshier of Shekinah Mennonite Fellowship, officiating.  Burial will be in Croghan Mennonite Cemetery.  Calling hours are from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday May 27, 2026 at Croghan Mennonite Church.    Contributions in his memory may be made to River Valley Mennonite School, P.O.
