Bert A. Austin

BEAVER FALLS-Bert A Austin, 94, formerly a resident of Beaver Falls, N.Y., passed away June 15, 2024 surrounded by family at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, Lowville, N.Y., where he had resided since 2020.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bruce Chapman officiating, and burial including Military Honors to follow in the Riverside Cemetery Annex, Beaver Falls, N.Y.  There are no calling hours.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beth and James Monnat of Croghan; a son-in-law Birlyn Flint of Wakefield, MA, a brother David (Elizabeth) Austin and sister June Austin;  and 2 sisters-in-law, Joanne Austin and Marcia Dinkle. He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte, daughter Janet Austin, son Barry Austin, brothers Leonard and Kenneth Austin, and two sisters Norma (Ed) Yousey and Pauline (Ceylon) Merry.

Bert was born on September 27, 1929 in Martinsburg, N.Y., the son of the late Leon A. and Verda Waldron Austin. He lived in Pine Grove for most of his childhood, graduating from Lowville Academy in 1947. Bert started working for Lowville Farmer’s Co-Op, then GLF, in 1948. On May 19, 1951 he married Charlotte Taylor at the Lowville Methodist Church with Rev. Kendell Scouten officiating. Bert served in the Army Corps of Engineers with occupational forces in Germany 1951-1952, until his honorable discharge. After returning from his military service, he returned to work at the Lowville Farmer’s Co-Op in several positions, becoming general manager in 1984. He retired in October 1992 after 44 years there. Charlotte Austin passed away January 13, 2012.

He was an active member of the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, where he served in many positions there. Bert was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post #1663. Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, and Black River Campers. He was an honorary member of the Beaver Falls Fire Department and served as Fire Commissioner for 15 years. Bert served on the Board of Directors for Lewis County Cooperative Extension; was a member of the Lowville Businessman’s Association; and was selected to Who’s Who for U.S Executives in 1989. He served as secretary for Lewis County Feed Dealers association; and was active on the Lewis County Citizen’s Patrol, and served on the Beaver Falls Water Board.  Bert was a member of the Senior Citizens Club and was a caretaker for many years with the Beaver Falls Cemetery Association. Bert was particularly proud of being the first Walmart Greeter when the Lowville store opened its doors, staying employed there for several years.
