Bernard J. "Chibbie" Monnat Obituary

CROGHAN - Bernard J. “Chibbie” Monnat, 93, formerly of State Route 812,
Croghan passed away Tuesday February 4, 2025 at Lewis County Residential
Healthcare Facility, Lowville.
Bernard was born on August 17, 1931 at home in Croghan, a son of the late
Maynard C. and Catherine M. Martin Monnat. He graduated from Beaver Falls
High School in 1949, and worked on the Steve Buckingham dairy farm for two
years following graduation. Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and was
stationed in England and France during his four years of service to our country.
After his service, he went back to work on the dairy farm. On November 29,
1958, he married Dorothy Anne Boliver at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in
Indian River. Bernard went to work with the I.B.E.W. Local 1249 as a heavy
equipment operator for many years until his retirement. During this time, he
served as the Croghan Town Superintendent. He also served on the Town
Board and Town Assessor for several years. Chibbie owned the Indian River
Hotel from 1972 – 1982, and drove log truck during the 1970s for Alvin Aldrich.
Together with his wife and family, they owned a dairy farm in Indian River from
1969 until 2016.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy; four children, Lynn M. Monnat; Larry
F. and Denise Monnat; Lisa M. Monnat; Loren “Jim” and Sherri Monnat, all of
Croghan; six grandchildren, Jamie, Brennan, Josh, Cody, Ben, and Colten; four
great-grandchildren, Alexis, Lucas, Allison and Alizabeth; his siblings and their
spouses, Gordon and Barbara Monnat of Croghan; Ellen “Kee” Proulx of
Croghan; Rosemary and Duane Schwendy of Carthage; Elizabeth Pettitt of
Camillus; Milton “Mouse” and Janet Monnat of Castorland; Patricia and Robert
Campanelli of Rhode Island; I. Michael and Susan Monnat of Virginia; Stephen
and Dorothy Monnat of Lowville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is
predeceased by a brother, Franklyn Monnat; his sister and her husband, Edna
and Carl Ritz; and a brother-in-law, Wilfred “Stump” Proulx.
Bernard was a communicant of Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan. He was a
member of the North Country Draft Horse Club. His love was farming, horses,
and all animals. Chibbie loved to visit with people, and enjoyed going to Wishy’s.
Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
A funeral Mass will be said on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St.
Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan with Rev. Donald Manfred, Pastor
officiating. Spring burial with Military Honors will be in Indian River Cemetery. A
fellowship meal will follow the funeral Mass in the church fellowship hall. There
will be no calling hours per Chibbie’s wishes. Contributions in his memory may
be made to Indian River Cemetery, c/o Wendall Kuhl, PO Box 222, Croghan, NY
13327. Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

The family would like to thank the staff on the 4th floor of Lewis County
Residential Health Care Facility for their exceptional care and compassion for
