Patricia H. (Smithling) Yarina

LOWVILLE – Patricia H. Yarina, 67, of Division Street, passed away Tuesday evening, August 29, 2017, at Lewis County General Hospital. 

She is survived by her husband of nearly 34 years, John; a son, Robert J. Yarina of Oceanside, CA; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Timothy W. and Leueen Smithling of Beaver Falls; Francis M. “Frank” and Lisa Smithling of Martinsburg; a sister-in-law, Judy Smithling of Seneca Castle, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is predeceased by two brothers, Charles “Tex” Smithling and Thomas H. Smithling; and a sister, Cynthia E. Smithling, who died in infancy.

Patricia was born on November 14, 1949 in Lowville, NY, a daughter of the late Charles H., Sr. and G. Helen Edick Smithling.  She graduated from Lowville Academy in 1968, and earned a Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Brockport in 1972.  Pat did substitute teaching for seven years and then went to work for Key Bank as a teller.  On September 17, 1983, she married John S. Yarina at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Houseville with Rev. Paschyl Rys officiating.  Pat stayed home to raise their son before going back to the bank part-time, and also was a substitute teacher at Lowville Academy.  In 2001, she was hired as a Court Clerk in the Town of Martinsburg.  In 2008, she was hired as a Court Clerk for the Town of Watson, Town of Leyden, and Village of Port Leyden.  That same year she was hired as Court Clerk of the Town of Lowville. In 2009 she became Acting Justice in the Village of Lowville.  In 2010 Pat became the Village Justice in the Village of Lowville. Then, in 2014 she became the Town of Lowville Justice, but later resigned due to illness on December 31, 2016. Patricia was a member of the NYS Magistrates Association and the NYS Court Clerk Association.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, gardening, and loved to read.

In keeping with Pat’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Burial will be held privately in Martinsburg Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Lewis County Humane Society, P.O. Box 682, Lowville, NY  13367 or Friends of Lewis County Hospice P.O. Box 266 Lowville, N.Y. 13367.
