GLENFIELD- Melvin L. Zehr, 76, of Baldwin Road, Glenfield, died Wednesday morning, July 26, 2017 at his home, under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.
Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. A graveside service with Military Honors will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery with Ministers of the Church, officiating. A luncheon at 3 G Fire Department in Glenfield will immediately follow the graveside service. Any food donations may be taken directly to the fire hall any time after 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning.
Mel was born on May 30, 1941 in LeRay, NY, to the late Reuben and Melvina Bunker Zehr. Mel graduated from Carthage High School and then enlisted in the United States Air Force, working as a radar repairman. After the service, Mel worked for Otis Elevator, Mosler Safe Company, and Con Air in Pennsylvania, before moving back to New York. Mel worked at Lewis County General Hospital in the maintenance department until his retirement in 2006.
Mel was married to Margaret “Peggy” Ursitz from 1964 until her death in 1979. Mel married Mary Peebles Farney on July 19, 2003, who survives him. In addition to his wife Mary, Mel is survived by a daughter, Linda Lee Zeigler, Bridgeville, PA, a son, Mark and his wife Heather of Millheim, PA, a step daughter, Donna Hlad and her husband, Don of New Bremen, NY; Nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Mel is also survived by two brothers, Roy and his wife Shirley of Saffell, Arkansas, and Daniel and his wife Janet of Carthage; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mel is predeceased by his son, Bruce; his brothers, Arthur and Gordon and sisters, Belle Riley and Arlene Camidge, as well as three siblings that died in infancy, Nettie, Glenn and Elmer.
