LYONS FALLS – Gerald Joseph Boshart, Jr., 84, of McAlpine Street, Lyons Falls, passed away Saturday evening, December 30, 2017, at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, surrounded by his family. 

The funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville with Rev. Mr. Ronald J. Pominville, officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will be held in the spring in Wildwood Cemetery.  Calling hours are from 2 – 5 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.  A gathering at Lowville American Legion Post 162 will immediately follow the funeral service.  Any food donations may be taken directly to the American Legion Post any time after 12:00 noon on Wednesday.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowville Food Pantry, 7646 Forest Ave., Lowville, NY  13367; or to Lowville American Legion Post #162, for the museum project, 5383 Dayan St., Lowville, NY  13367.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Fran; a son, Joe Boshart (Sheree) of Lowville; a daughter, Catherine and John Cory of Lyons Falls; a sister, Alice Dolan of Holland Patent; two grandsons, Dan and Joe; a great-grandson, Joseph.  He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Laurine Baxter; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wesley and Barb Clair; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Francis, who died in infancy, Edward and Brian Boshart; and by a brother-in-law, Robert Dolan.

Gerald was born on September 10, 1933 in Lowville, NY, a son of the late Gerald Joseph Boshart Sr. and Madelyn Pinck Boshart.  He graduated from Lyons Falls High School in 1951.  He worked for the Gould Paper Company until being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving stateside from 1952 until 1954.  After the war, Gerald began work for the NY Central Railroad as the Train Fireman, becoming Engineer in 1956.  He worked for the railroad out of both Watertown and Utica, and was proud that he hauled the largest ore train out of Benson Mines.  In 1970, Gerald and his brother, Brian, started the first commercial refuse collection company in southern Lewis County, Boshart Sanitation, which the brothers operated until 1980, when Gerald founded a construction company.  He worked at the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department from 1956 until 2013.  His duties included serving as a deputy, jail guard, and he was a charter member of the Lewis County Citizen’s Patrol.

Gerald was a 50 plus year member of Lyons Falls Fire Department, a life member of B.P.O.E. 1605, Lowville Lodge, and a member of Lowville American Legion Post 162.  He enjoyed spending time with his friends at Matawan Hunting Club, of which he was a founding member.

He enjoyed playing golf at Brantingham Golf Club, hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family.  Gerald was thoughtful and generous, and enjoyed making people laugh.  He loved his black labs.
