LOWVILLE-GAIL WELLING PLANAS, 68, of St. Marys, Georgia, formerly of Lowville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on September 27, 2018 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
A private graveside service will be held at Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery, Croghan with Ministers of the Church officiating.
She is survived by her husband John Planas; son and daughter in law, Stephen and Katherine Planas; brother John Welling and cousins Linda Farney and Sandra Farney. Gail will be laid to rest in Croghan alongside her parents, Albert C. and Gladys Farney Welling and her maternal grandparents, Erban Farney and Irene Schlieder Farney.
Born in Lowville on February 6, 1950, Gail was raised in Buffalo, NY and Cheshire, CT. She attended Marietta College in Ohio, receiving her B.A. in 1972. Gail worked as a TV news reporter and anchor in Parkersburg, WV; in retail advertising in Cincinnati and Toledo, OH and in radio advertising in Findlay, OH and Rockland, ME. For several years, she also managed the gift shops of the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head, ME and the Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Marys, Ga., until her retirement.
Gail enjoyed tending her garden, taking walks through the neighborhood looking for planting ideas, and cooking traditional family recipes. Reading mystery novels and solving crossword puzzles were her favorite leisure activities. While growing up and into adulthood she enjoyed visiting the family camp in the summer at Chase Lake. It always held a special place in her heart and she never forgot the enjoyable times she had there.
