Arthur C. Einhorn

LOWVILLE-Arthur Einhorn, educator, anthropologist, and scholar of Native peoples in Northern New York, passed away Friday, December 22, after a brief illness. For many years, Arthur taught history at Lowville Academy, where he was the first to teach New York State-approved courses in anthropology for high school students. He also served as an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Jefferson Community College, Lewis County historian, and director of the Lewis County Historical Association and Museum. Einhorn was also an Associate Director of the Institute for Indians in Higher Education at St. Lawrence University. While his main scholarly interest was native groups of North America and the Caribbean region, much of Einhorn’s professional work has been with the Iroquois tribes in New York and Canada.

In the 1960's Arthur and his wife Shirley initiated the Lewis County Historical Society Journal. Throughout his decades of teaching, he impacted the lives of hundreds of children. He raised two of his own children, (Winona and Victor) and six Native American foster children who also graduated from Lowville Academy.

His many professional contacts were often guests in his Lowville home, including notables such as Edmund Wilson, Vine Deloria, Wm. N. Fenton, the Prime Minister of Dominica, Harold Conklin from Yale University, and many leading figures from the Iroquois Community.

After retiring from teaching at Lowville Academy, he was busy writing manuscripts for publication. As a devoted grandfather, he and his late wife, Shirley, often hosted their grandchildren for summer vacations.

Our beloved Arthur is survived by his daughter, Winona Einhorn-Hitt and her husband David of Round Lake, NY; son Victor and his wife Hyon of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren, Kathleen Einhorn and twins Emily and Jillian Einhorn-Hitt, his foster children, including 　foster daughter Joanne Tallchief Kabance and sisters-in-law, Phylis Stievater of Phoenix, Arizona, Mary Jane Long of Rochester, NH, and Marsha Virkler-Stanford of Glenfield, NY; as well as nieces and nephews .

A memorial service will be held in the future, when weather conditions make for easier travel.
