Richard L. Hunziker

LYONS FALLS – Richard L. Hunziker, 88, of Cherry St., formerly of Greig, died Sunday morning, May 22, 2016 at Upstate Medical University Hospital, Syracuse. 

He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Frieda; three children, Ronald and Barbara Hunziker of Miles City, MT; Brian Hunziker of Watertown; Susan and Dan Dibble of Greig; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Charlotte Hunziker of Glenfield; four grandchildren, Danielle Dibble, Andrew Dibble, James Hunziker, John (Holly) Hunziker; four great-grandchildren, Alexus Hunziker, Alvin James “AJ” Hunziker, Jacob Hunziker, and Cameron Hunziker; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his siblings, William Hunziker, who died at 10 years old, Phyllis Hanno, Janice Payne, John Hunziker, Arthur “Glenn” Hunziker, and Carol Price.

Richard was born on September 5, 1927 in New Bremen, NY, a son of the late John and Lena Frye Hunziker.  He attended country school in West Martinsburg, and Father Leo Memorial School in Croghan.  After school, he worked on an area farm for two years.  He was drafted into Army Air Corps during World War II, and was stationed in Iceland for one year.  He was honorably discharged in January 1947.  After his service, he worked for Kraft Foods on Bostwick Street in Lowville, before going working for Hoffman and Dudo Cheese Factory.  From 1949 until 1952, Mr. Hunziker worked in Utica at a machine shop.  On September 5, 1953, he married Frieda M. Bragg at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville, with Monsignor John Cotter officiating.  Richard worked for Climax Manufacturing in Castorland, and later worked for Household Gas, now Suburban Propane, in Lowville.  In 1971, he began working for the Town of Greig Highway Department, retiring in 1989.

Mr. Hunziker was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Glenfield.  He was a past member of Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, VFW.  Richard enjoyed hunting, and was a member of the Bald Rock Hunting Club for many years.

Calling hours will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, following calling hours, with Rev. Mr. Ronald Pominville officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will be in Brantingham Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lewis County Search and Rescue, P.O. Box 247, Lowville, NY  13367; 3 – G Fire Department, P.O. Box 112, Glenfield, NY  13343, or a charity of one’s choice.
