CARTHAGE – Nelda E. Steria, 92, of NYS Route 26, died Tuesday morning, March 8, 2016 at Carthage Area Hospital.

The funeral will be held at the Croghan Mennonite Church on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.   Calling hours will be from 3 – 6 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the church.  Spring burial will be in the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, PO Box 500, Akron, PA  17501-0500.  Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

She is survived by four children; Carol K. Steria of Carthage, Douglas J. and wife, Maureen Steria of Carthage, Bruce J. Steria of Carthage, Clark M. Steria of Carthage; her siblings, Robert and Bettie Moser of Severna Park, Maryland, Betty Lehman of Lowville, Ruth Widrick of Beaver Falls, Wilbur and Sharon Moser of Castorland; four grandchildren, Jerilyn, Michael and Kristine Steria, and Rocky Crola; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by Joan Sweeney, a fresh air child of California.  Nelda was predeceased by her husband Daniel M. Steria, who died on April 16, 1971; brother and sister-in-law, Nelson and Lorena Moser; a sister, Eleanor K. Moser; two brothers-in-law, Beryl Lehman and Derwood Widrick.       

Nelda was born on June 28, 1923 at home in Castorland, NY,  a daughter of the late John R. and Katie K. Leis Moser.  She attended country school in Castorland and Lowville Academy.  She did house cleaning in Castorland.  When she was 18, she went to work at Climax Manufacturing in Castorland for eight years.  On September 1, 1948, she married Daniel M. Steria at Croghan Mennonite Church with Rev. Chris Noftsier officiating.  Together with her husband, the couple owned and operated a dairy farm on Route 26 until her husband’s death.  The farm is now owned by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Maureen.  She raised her family and later worked for Carthage High School in the cafeteria, until her retirement in 1984.

She was a member of Croghan Mennonite Church, and enjoyed sewing with the Croghan Mennonite Church sewing circle.  She also sewed for the Agape Shop in Watertown.  Nelda enjoyed making maple sugar candy, quilts, vegetable and flower gardening.
