Mary Elizabeth Thoma

CASTORLAND – Mary Elizabeth Thoma, 92, of Karcher Country Estates, a lifelong resident of Castorland, passed away early Saturday morning, June 18, 2016, surrounded by her family at Lewis County General Hospital, under the loving care of Lewis County Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., with Rev. Frances Hemstreet officiating.  Burial will be in Castorland Union Cemetery.  Calling hours will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville NY  13367.

She is survived by two nieces, Peg Lautenschlager of Lowville; Barb Weiler of Castorland; a nephew and his wife, David and Christine Thoma of Castorland; several great nieces and nephews, and cousins.  She is predeceased by a sister, Dorothy McVoy; a brother, Walter Thoma; and a nephew, Tom McVoy.

Mary was born on December 31, 1923 at home in Castorland, NY, a daughter of the late Elmer D. and Margaret M. Schack Thoma.  She graduated from Carthage High School, and went to work for Climax Manufacturing in Castorland, retiring in 1986 after 43 years of service.

Miss Thoma was a long-time member of the former Castorland United Methodist Church, and a current member of Beaver Valley United Methodist Church in Naumburg.  

Mary lived for bingo.  She loved the outdoors, and enjoyed outdoor work and gardening.
