CASTORLAND – Leslie Francis Ver Schneider, 84, of Steele Road, passed away Sunday evening, June 26, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse, after a brief illness. 

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2016 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with Rev. Daniel Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.  Calling hours will be held from 1 – 3 and 5 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  A gathering will be held following burial at the St. Stephen’s Church Hall.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 38, Croghan, NY  13327.

He is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Norma; ten children, Thomas J. and Patty Ver Schneider of Suffolk, VA; Stephen F. Ver Schneider and Julie Reape of Castorland ; Mary V. and Ralph Kimbrell of Croghan; Daniel B. Ver Schneider of Castorland; Anthony J. and Suzanne Ver Schneider of  Virginia Beach, VA; Matthew J. and Laura Ver Schneider of Freeville, NY Theresa M. and Rodney Tabolt of Lowville; Joseph D. and Heather Ver Schneider of Cortland; Jennifer L. and Douglas Iseneker of Lowville; Paul D. Ver Schneider of Beaver Falls; two sisters, Eleanor Terry and Jean VerSchneider of Lowville; 23 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by twin daughters, Claire and Clairice Ver Schneider, who died shortly after birth in January 1963; and a brother, Kenneth G. Ver Schneider.

Leslie was born on December 15, 1931 in the Town of Croghan, a son of the late Leland C. and Maude L. Jaycox Ver Schneider.  He attended district #15 country school on the Third Road, and graduated from Father Leo Memorial School in 1951.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in Germany from 1951 until 1953.  On April 23, 1960, he married Norma Jean David at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Natural Bridge, with Rev. Leo McCarthy officiating.  Together with his wife and children, the family operated a dairy farm on the Steele Road until 2000.  Leslie was a mechanic for area farms, and a heavy equipment operator for many years.  He also sprayed and planted crops for area farmers. 

Leslie was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan.  He was a life member of Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, Lowville VFW.  He was a member of Beaver River Memorial Post 1663, Croghan American Legion, and a life member of Black River Valley Fiddlers. 

Les enjoyed tinkering, carpentry, and talking with friends and neighbors.  He enjoyed country music and dancing, family gatherings, and Thursday luncheons with his cousins and close friends.
