Kenneth C. Austin

LOWVILLE – Kenneth C. Austin, 83, formerly of Beaver Falls, passed away on November 7, 2015 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, where he has resided since April 2011.

He was born on May 27, 1932, a son of Verda and Leon Austin.  He was a 1950 graduate of Lowville Academy.  After graduating, he was employed at Lowville Farmer’s Co-Op until he entered the U.S. Army, serving from November 1952 until November 1954.

On June 26, 1954, he married the former Joanne Taylor, daughter of Elmer and Mary Taylor, at Beaver Falls Methodist Church with Rev. Leonard Bass officiating.

He was an active member of Beaver Falls Fire Department for 48 years, including many years as fire chief.  In 1972, he was a member of the first EMT class Beaver Falls Fire Department held.  Mr. Austin was a member of Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, where he was active in church activities.  He served as Town of New Bremen Councilman, was a member of the water board, and the cemetery board. 

He was employed for 29 years at Beaverite Products in Croghan and Beaver Falls.  After his retirement in 1989, he worked part-time for Carlton Zehr Trucking.  He was a substitute bus driver at Beaver River Central School for many years, which he enjoyed very much.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; three children, Cynthia Austin of Castorland; Karen (Kenneth) Ritz of Croghan; Kevin (Sharlene) Austin of Castorland; Eight grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.  He is also survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, David (Betty) Austin of Castorland; Bert Austin of Beaver Falls; and a sister, June Austin of Glenfield.

At his request, there will be no calling hours.  A private burial service will be held in Beaver Falls Cemetery Annex.  A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Herrmann, Pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired Methodist minister.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 441 West Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY  13204; or to Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, 6508 LeFevre St., Beaver Falls, NY  13305.
