Henry A. "Hank" Zehr

LOWVILLE – Henry A. “Hank” Zehr, 95, of Division Street, Lowville, died Friday afternoon, June 24, 2016, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Calling hours are from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Croghan Mennonite Church, with Rev. Keith Zehr, Rev. Evan Zehr, and Rev. Milton Zehr officiating. Burial will follow in the Croghan Mennonite Cemetery.  Contributions may be made to Croghan Adult Care Facility, 9837 Main Street, Croghan, NY  13327.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Sherwood and Linda Zehr of Black River; Estella Yancey of Florida; Rachael Widrick of Lowville; Florence Lehman of New Bremen; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Zehr of Castorland; Janet Zehr of Croghan.  Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by a son, Albert Earl Zehr; brothers, Gilbert Zehr and Clifford Zehr; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosella and Walter Thompson, Grace and Elmer Steria; a sister-in-law Joan Zehr; and brothers-in-law, Clyde Yancey, Sherwood Widrick and Daniel Lehman.  His longtime special friend, Maybell Dana, whom he danced with all over the world, predeceased him by only 25 days.

Henry was born at home in Belfort, NY, on April 3, 1921, a son of the late David H. and Veronica Widrick Zehr. He attended country school at Belfort. On April 29, 1942, he married Mable Steria.  The couple purchased a dairy farm on Route 177 in New Boston.  They retired in 1979, and moved to Division Street in Lowville.  The couple cared for many foster children over the years.  Mrs. Zehr died on November 10, 1981.  After his retirement, Hank drove cattle truck for the Lomeo sale barn for ten years.

Mr. Zehr was a member of the Lowville Mennonite Church. He enjoyed traveling, and his friendship with the Amish.
