Harold C. Allen

September 22, 1919 ~ January 20, 2018 (age 98) 98 Years Old


LOWVILLE – Harold Clifford Allen, 98, of Brookside Circle, passed away early Saturday morning, January 20, 2018, at Lewis County General Hospital.

Harold was born to Clifford and Edith Burdick Allen at the Allen Homestead on Route 12, Lyons Falls on September 22, 1919. He attended the one room schoolhouse on Route 12, Lyons Falls. He worked on the family farm for 20 years. Harold also worked as a guide around Otter Creek and the Old Forge/Thendara area guiding city tourists for $7.00 per day. In addition, he worked at the Gould Paper Mill, Lyons Falls, NY. He was a millwright at a feed mill in Binghamton, NY and also in Geneva, NY at a corn husker/canning factory. Mr. Allen worked for the railroad, leveling rail beds while he was laid off in the winter. Just before he married, Harold worked installing runways at Rome Air Force Base. On September 29, 1946 he married Jane Bowman Gould in Johnstown, NY and bought the Seymour Dairy Farm on Route 12 which he operated for 31 years.

Mr. Allen was a member of Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls, for over 80 years, where he was a member of the Church Board of Session. He was also a member of the Brantingham Lake Association, Brantingham Golf Club, and Lyons Falls Alive. He was a past member of the Lions Club and Loyal Order of the Moose-Palm Harbor, Florida. He sat on the Board of Directors for the Lyons Falls National Bank, serving as Vice President and Appraiser; he also sat on the Turin Cemetery Board.

Mr. Allen enjoyed playing pitch, golfing, traveling with his wife, and, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and many close friends.

He is survived by his children, Marcia A. and Joseph Owen of Brooklyn; Mary A. and John Dixon of Gouverneur; Stephen H. and Jill Allen of Lowville; his grandchildren, J. Robert Owen, Katherine and John Holenda, Elizabeth Dixon, Christopher Dixon, and Kayla Allen; his great-grandson, John Joseph Holenda; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Allen was predeceased by his wife, Jane Gould Allen, who died November 30, 2014; a daughter, Carol G. Allen, who died August 2009; a brother, James Allen, and two sisters, Madonna Liendecker and Joyce Markham.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday March 3, 2018 at Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls with Rev. Elizabeth Smith, Pastor, and Rev. Naomi Kelly officiating.  A gathering at the church fellowship hall will immediately follow the funeral service.  Calling hours will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday March 3, 2018 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville.  Burial will be held privately by the family in the spring at Brantingham Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Forest Presbyterian Church, 4019 Center Street, Lyons Falls, NY 13368 or Brookside Senior Living Community- Benevolent Fund, 5701 Waters Road, Lowville, NY 13367.
