Charles E. Peebles

CASTORLAND – Charles E. Peebles, 98, formerly of State Route 410, died Saturday morning, September 23, 2017 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility. 

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg, with Rev. Tracy Cook, Pastor, officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will be in Martinsburg Cemetery.  Calling hours will be from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.    Contributions may be made to Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 127, Castorland, NY  13620.

He is survived by three children, Candace R. Bezek of Castorland; Kevin W. Peebles and his wife Mona of Castorland; Cheryl and Thomas Remillard of Peru, NY; a sister, Louise Schantz of Lowville; a sister-in-law, Pearl Peebles of Denmark; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is predeceased by his wife, Ardis, who died May 21, 2016; four brothers, Henry and his wife, Loretta Peebles; Austin Peebles, James Peebles and Harold Peebles, and by a grandson, Trent Shaw.

Charles was born on July 14, 1919 at home in Lowville, a son of the late Lloyd and Mary Austin Peebles.  He attended country school on Route 26 in Denmark.  Charles worked on area farms, and in the construction of Pine Camp.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 from until 1945 with the 152nd Field Artillery, 43rd Division, during World War II.  After his service, Charles worked as a milk tester at the milk station in Castorland.  On June 19, 1952, he married Ardis Langley at the Easton Baptist Church in Easton, Maine, with Rev. Henderson officiating.  Together with his wife, the couple owned and operated a dairy farm on NYS Route 410 in Castorland until 1985, at which time their son, Kevin, took over the farm.  Charles continued to work with Kevin on the farm in his retirement. 

Mr. Peebles was a member of Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg.  He was a member of Denmark Grange #535, and served on the Board of Directors of Production Credit, Lowville.  Charles was an avid horseman, and was a member of the North Country Draft Horse Club, New York State Draft Horse Club, and New York State Percheron Draft Horse Club.
