CASTORLAND – Anna L. Grau, 93, formerly of Van Amber Road, died peacefully Sunday afternoon, January 15, 2017 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg, with Rev. Tracy Cook officiating.  Spring burial will be in the Naumburg Union Cemetery.  Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.  Contributions may be made to Lewis Country Residential Health Care Facility, ATTN: Activities Department, 7785 N. State Street, Lowville, NY.  Anna’s family would like to give special thanks to the third floor staff of the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility for their loving care and kindness during her stay there.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and David Steria of Carthage; Lisa and Dale Proulx of Castorland; three grandchildren, John Steria of Baldwinsville; Mike Steria of Carthage; and Daniel Proulx of Castorland; four great-grandchildren, David and Connor Steria, and twins, Ethan and Brady Steria; and several nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by her husband, Charles Grau; a sister, Eleanor Abel; six brothers, Lansing, Kenneth, Gerald, Vernon, Howard Jr. and Allan Hoppel.

Mrs. Grau was born at home in Croghan on July 28, 1923, a daughter of the late Howard Hoppel Sr. and Helen E. Miller Hoppel.  She attended country school on the Third Road and attended high school at Beaver River Central School.  On January 1, 1947, she married Charles A. Grau at the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church Parsonage with Rev. Frank Hube, officiating.  She worked for Climax Manufacturing in Castorland and Lowville for many years, before retiring in 1986.  Mr. Grau died on February 1, 2008.

She was a member of Beaver Valley United Methodist Church, Naumburg.  She was also a member of the Lowville VFW Auxiliary, Post #6912, and Beaver River Senior Citizens. 

She enjoyed crocheting and embroidery, as well as word puzzles and going to garage sales and auctions.  Together with her husband, they followed closely the North Country Draft Horse Club and Lewis County Fast Pitch Softball League for many years.  They also enjoyed playing Euchre and attending card parties.
